Sural nerve with no contribution from tibial nerve – a rare case

چکیده
Introduction Sural nerve (SN) is a sensory nerve which supplies the skin of the posterolateral aspect of the distal one third of the leg, lateral malleolus, along the lateral side of the foot and little toe. The lateral sural cutaneous nerve (LSCN) arises from the common peroneal nerve (also called common fibular nerve or CFN), supplies the skin over the upper part of the lateral and posterolateral aspect of the leg. It often gives a communicating branch called peroneal communicating branch to the medial sural cutaneous nerve (MSCN) from tibial nerve (TN) and thus form sural nerve (SN) [1]. According to standard textbooks, CFN gives rise to two cutaneous branches, often from a common trunk –they are lateral sural nerve and sural communicating nerve (SCN). SCN arises near the head of fibula and crosses the lateral head of gastrocnemius muscle to join sural nerve. SCN may descend separately as far as the heel. According to some authors, SCN is also called LSCN [2, 3]. Clinically, SN is widely used for both diagnostic purpose (biopsy and nerve conduction velocity study) and therapeutic purpose (nerve grafting and surgical reconstruction) [4].

Electrodiagnostic study of peripheral nervous system in Behcet’s disease
Introduction: Bechcet’s disease (BD) is a chronic disease with multiple organ involvement such as central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). Involvement of PNS has been reported controversially and uncommon in textbooks and literatures. The aim of this study in to evaluate the auxiliary role of electrodiagnosis in early detection of PNS involvement to prevent neuropathy...

Background & Aims: Despite the development of new therapeutic and clinical mmethods, type 2 diabetes is widely increasing in the world. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of 12 weeks resistance training on neural conduction in men with type 2 diabetes with peripheral neuropathy. Materials & Methods: This study was conducted on twenty-two male with type 2 diabetes who were...
متن کاملCommon Peroneal Nerve Palsy Secondary to a Proximal Tibiofibular Joint “Ganglion Cyst”—A Case Report and Review of Literature
Although ganglion cysts occur frequently, their presence in the lower extremities is rare and they seldom cause peripheral nerve compression. There are enumerable case reports of intraneural ganglion involvement with the common peroneal nerve and its branches, the sural nerve, and the posterior tibial nerve but extraneural ganglion sciatic and common peroneal nerve palsy cases are quite rare. O...
متن کاملComposite vascularised osteocutaneous fibula and sural nerve graft for severe open tibial fracture--functional outcome at one year: a case report.
Management of severe open tibial fracture with neurovascular injury is difficult and controversial. Primary amputation is an acceptable option as salvaging the injured, insensate, and ischaemic limb may result in chronic osteomyelitis and non-functional limb. We report a case of open tibial fracture associated with segmental bone and soft tissue loss, posterior tibial nerve and artery injuries,...
متن کاملA Rare Anatomical Variation of Sciatic Nerve and its Relationship with Piriformis Muscle
Sciatic nerve is the thickest nerve of the body which is formed by ventral branches of L4, L5, S1, S2 and S3 of spinal nerves as a part of sacral plexus in pelvis. It leaves the pelvis via the greater sciatic foramen below piriformis muscle and descends between the greater trochanter and ischial tuberosity, along the back of the thigh and dividing into the tibial and common peroneal (fibular) n...
